When Nirvana enquired about working with Steve Albini, they were the biggest band in the world. They were riding the momentum of their second album, Nevermind, which had reached heights no one thought possible for a ‘grunge’ band from Seattle. Their record label wanted to cash in on their third LP based on this surprising and seismic success. Their hope was 'more of the same with a bit more pop'.
The band could have worked with any producer in the world. They could have demanded any recording budget they wanted. They could have recorded the perfect pop record, bowing to the pressure of their record label.
Instead, they chose to work with Steve Albini, with their own integrity. The result was In Utero. An album that was harder, less pop, and far more controversial than Nevermind (see the song Rape Me as one example). An album that will forever be adored not just for being perfect, but for being everything Nirvana was, instead of what the money men would have preferred.
Any rock band that has tried to record music in a studio will appreciate how hard it is to 'sound like you.' Replicating the sound you're used to, namely, playing unabridged in a rehearsal studio or on stage, is the sound you craft and come to love. Trying to capture that in a studio is mortally hard.
Few have ever done it better than Steve Albini. His resume is borderline unfathomable! His genius was making bands and artists sound exactly as they wanted. His unwavering beliefs about how music should be recorded made him so remarkable. Albini's four-page letter to Nirvana captures this perfectly. It is a shining example of someone staying true to their values and helping a band stay true to theirs. For this reason, it is one of the most beautiful, moving, and brilliant things ever written.
You can take many things from these great letters. For me, above all, it's never compromising who you are.
Steve Albini sadly passed away at age 61 on 8th May 2024. He was a true shining light in the world, and his legacy will live forever.
Thank you for reading. Take care of yourself and others.
Much love,
Benjamin
